Pilates with Kendal House Osteopath

Tamsin Hewitt

Pilates is a mind-body exercise programme that emphasises the importance of a strong and stable central core, focused in the deep muscles of the abdomen, spine & pelvis. Further challenge is added through various arm & leg movements, and then additional resistance through the use of equipment. By concentrating on precise body alignment and control throughout a series of flowing movements carried out with an awareness of breath control, regular practice can help re-educate the body to restore correct movement patterns.

Modified Pilates has been developed by the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI), based on scientific research evidence into the benefits of spinal and lumbo-pelvic stabilisation. Modified Pilates has been designed specifically for use within the rehabilitation setting, to treat & prevent recurrence of a range of postural & musculo-skeletal conditions. The traditional Pilates repertoire has been broken down into clearly graded exercises enabling a gradual progression towards normal spinal function. A program of exercises can be tailored to the individual in order to reduce the risk of injury, correct muscle imbalances and improve strength, stamina and functional performance.

Tamsin is a fully qualified osteopath who is currently training as a Modified Pilates instructor with the APPI. She would be pleased to instruct you in the basics of Modified Pilates and then develop an individually-tailored exercise program, through a short course of sessions. Modified Pilates is appropriate to complement your osteopathic treatment.

DEALING WITH MIGRAINE WITH ACUPUNCTURE

I’d been suffering from migraines for over seven years following a snowboarding accident that dislocated my shoulder and injured my neck. I was affected at least twice a week and had noticed that the severity was increasing as was the amount of painkillers that I was regularly taking.

During an attack I would suffer from diarrhoea, vomiting, and neuralgia and that’s before we even got to the severe headaches! Enough was enough and I knew I had to take action other than relying on conventional painkillers.

My partner had suffered from lower back problems for a number of years until she had gone to Kendal House for a treatment with Anna Krypczyk. She immediately recommended that I get a treatment as she had found Anna to be very professional and knowledgeable. However, I’m not fond of needles and kept putting if off.

The turning point was when I was in a remote part of the Himalayas with a severe migraine that left me almost screaming in pain. I was almost out of painkillers, there were no shops nearby and it dawned on me that if it took someone sticking needles in me for an hour a week to feel better then it had to be better than this! I booked myself in for a treatment as soon as I returned.

The initial session involved a lengthy discussion about the nature of my migraines and any other health issues that I had. I was impressed about how thorough this was and found it good to talk in detail about the attacks. Then it came to the actual acupuncture. I hadn’t realised how nervous I was until I was lying on the treatment table and I could feel my legs shaking. Luckily, I didn’t need to be worried and Anna, seeing that I was so nervous, really helped me through that first session.

The following day I had a migraine. However, it was much reduced and only required one set of painkillers to stop a full attack. This hadn’t happened for years and I just hoped it wasn’t a false dawn.

It wasn’t. I’ve been going for around five months now and rarely get a headache any more, let alone a migraine. My quality of life has improved dramatically; I have more energy, I’m happier and I’m not living in constant fear of having an attack. Even my sceptical work colleagues have noticed the difference in me. I don’t worry about going to acupuncture anymore. The sensation of the needles going in, whilst not pleasant, is not at all painful. There are times when you do feel a sharp sensation but this is only for a split second and is gone before you know it. I’ve even got to the stage where I’ve almost fallen asleep during a treatment. I only wish I’d gone sooner…

Lynsey continues with her

midwifery studies whilst working as an acupuncturist at Kendal House Clitheroe
