Chiropody
What is Chiropody?
State registered chiropodists are the foot-health professionals. They have undertaken a three-year full time course. Patients consult a chiropodist for advice on many conditions, for example:
- rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- peripheral vascular disease
- diabetes mellitus
- in-growing toenails
- rams horn nails
- backache and walking difficulties
- verrucae
- corns and bunions
- hammer toes
More advanced procedures undertaken include total and partial nail avulsions, biochemical assessment and the supply of orthotics. Since the 1970's state registered chiropodists have been allowed to administer local anaesthetics.
